McCoy Spring Creeks Montana Fly Fishing Vacations

McCoy Spring Creeks

The McCoy Cattle Company, home to two of Montana’s finest spring creeks, sits beneath the big Montana sky in the beautiful Beaverhead Valley, surrounded by the Ruby, Blacktail, and Pioneer mountain ranges.  Each creek contains widely varied stream habitats, including long, meandering pools, deep holes, riffles, sluices, and log structures.  The fish are smart and they are big.  McCoy fishing is not for the faint of heart, at times it requires one to sneak up to the water on all fours , or to tie on flies nearly too small to see. These waters will no doubt challenge an angler, though there are days when all the fish want are giant terrestrials.  The rewards are high and the fish are huge and healthy.  Long fishing beats and considerate limits on daily fisherman ensure the health of the fishery and guarantee a private worldclass angling adventure.

Three years ago the ranch owner and manager launched a creek restoration project to create more flow, reduce weeds, and provide more structure for the trout. Their focus was to remove the in-stream 'pond-like' pools and narrow the stream into a more natural 'spring creek'. By bringing the stream into a more natural configuration, they were able to increase flows, disperse fish populations, speed up the sediment movement, and create increased fishable holding water.  This will be the fourth summer since the restoration and the creeks have grown in well, evident by the health of the fish and insect populations.

Big Hole Lodge leases the ranch two days a week and clients are chosen on a first come first serve basis.
